A Conversation on Black Teaching Past and Present: Featuring Dr. Jarvis Givens
On Thursday, December 1st, Breakthrough Greater Boston will host our 15th annual Breakthroughs in Education event. A Conversation on Black Teaching Past and Present will feature the author of Fugitive Pedagogy, Dr. Jarvis Givens.
Givens is an assistant professor of education and African & African American studies at Harvard University. He specializes in the history of education, African American history, and theories of race and power in education. His first book, Fugitive Pedagogy: Carter G. Woodson and the Art of Black Teaching was published in 2021 to much acclaim. He is currently building the Black Teacher Archive and is preparing for his second book to be released in February 2023.
Following his remarks, we will have the opportunity to make ties from history to the present day. Dr. Givens will be joined by a panel of Black educators who are all alumni of Breakthrough Greater Boston’s teacher training program.
