Breakthrough Greater Boston Announces New Scholarship Opportunity

Sponsored by Local Medtech Company Hologic, Inc.

BOSTON, MA – Breakthrough Greater Boston announces a scholarship opportunity for student alumni who are currently attending a college. Funding for this scholarship is provided by Hologic, Inc., a leading medical technology and diagnostics company headquartered in Marlborough, MA.

This award represents the first time in the organization’s history that scholarship opportunities will be available to student alumni. With 94% of Breakthrough students accepted to four-year colleges, there will be many alumni candidates for the scholarship.

Breakthrough was founded in 1992 by MacArthur Genius Awardee Dr. Angela Duckworth  and has a unique dual mission to prepare low-income students for success in college and to train college students to become the next generation of urban teachers. The organization now serves 550 college-bound students annually across the three cities of Boston, Cambridge and Somerville.

Executive Director Elissa Spelman shares, “Breakthrough is so grateful for the support and generosity of Hologic in providing this scholarship to our alumni. We know that Breakthrough students are uniquely prepared to take on the challenges of college; however, the financial burden remains an obstacle. This scholarship will help to lessen the barriers that stand between our alumni and the path through college to successful careers.”

Through its philanthropy programs, Hologic, Inc. supports organizations that share their values and commitment to promoting healthier lives. This philanthropic focus includes promoting science, technology, engineering and math education (STEM), as well as social equality.

“Hologic aims to make a meaningful impact on the communities where we live and work,” said Monica Aguirre, the Company’s Chief of Staff. “. We share a similar mission with Breakthrough, and are thrilled to partner together to promote opportunities for low-income local youth  to engage with STEM education.”

The scholarship application opens in December, and the first class of awards will be announced this spring.
